Last summer I was in Zakynthos and I worked as a volunteer at the summer programs of Archelon.
One of our duties was called ‘beach patrol’!
We were walking up and down to the beach trying to protect the nests and to inform the tourists about the sea turtles!!!!
I really enjoyed it because you had a very good excuse so as to approach beautiful women and the most important to speak about something that we love : THE SEA TURTLES!!!!!
One of the usual questions that I had to answer was:
What are these small balls?
You don’t know? Please touch one of these! Smash it! Smell it! if you want you can eat it!!!!
After a few seconds I was starting feeling guilty about what I had said them!
Well, to be truth in case I was you I would not touch it!!!!
So, I was making them to feel uncomfortable and to start thinking that it is something ‘bad’ that is done from the sea turtles!!!!!!
No!!!!!!!!!! it is not what you think!!!! It is sea grass!!!!! It is food for the sea turtles…………
So, after this small play they were learning about this small ball!!!
To be not from Zakynthos and to ask info about this small ball is something very good and means that there are some people, who want to learn, help, support be informed about the environment.
But, to be from Zakynthos and to have no idea about this is a very sad fact.
p.s. I hope that Chris Dean ( scientific officer of Archelon ) will not read this post! Chris, I did not want so much to go for beach patrol so as to speak to beautiful women!!! Do not believe them!!!!
